Balıkesir University was established in accordance with the law numbered 3837 published in the Official Gazette dated 11 July 1992 and numbered 21281; It gained legal personality on January 1, 1993.

Balıkesir University (BAUN) is a higher education institution operating in the province of Balıkesir. Balıkesir University campus is located on the Bigadiç road, 17 km from the city center.

Although most Balıkesir province is located in South Marmara, it has landed in both Marmara and Aegean Region. Bursa, Kütahya in the east; İzmir, Manisa in the south; It is surrounded by the Aegean Sea in the west, Çanakkale in the west, and the Marmara Sea in the north. The population of Balıkesir, which has 20 districts and has a metropolitan status, has reached 1,196,176 as of 2016.
